OREGON – The death toll in Ogle County reached five Friday with the announcement of the death of a resident who tested positive for COVID-19, the Ogle County Health Department said in a news release.

Throughout the four-county area of Ogle, Lee, Whiteside and Carroll counties, 23 people with the virus have died.

Ogle also reported two new cases, increasing the number of cases among its residents to 307; 48 are active and 255 people have recovered.

The county reported 11 new cases Thursday, as it continues to deal with its mandated closure of the SuperValu grocery store in Oregon.

The store at 204 N. Fourth St. was ordered closed Wednesday by the health department because of a COVID-19 outbreak.

The health department found out about cases linked to the store over the weekend, County Health Administrator Kyle Auman said Wednesday. The department is working to contact trace employees and get households tested, but is not recommending testing for customers unless they have symptoms.

Auman and Cherie Rucker, the health department's emergency response coordinator, both declined to say how many SuperValu employees tested positive, or provide the rationale for closure.

Rucker did say that the department is still testing staff and determining the store's cleaning procedures.

Elsewhere, two new cases were announced in Lee County, of people in their 20s and 40s.

A Whiteside County resident in his or her 40s also tested positive, as did a Carroll County resident in his or her 30s, which is that county's only active case at this point.

Whiteside also announced one new recovery.

Statistics from the Illinois Department of Public Health are provided for municipalities by ZIP code, if it has more than five cases.
