Oglesby Police Chief Doug Hayse said a verbal warning went a long way in curbing illegal fireworks complaints within the community.

The chief reported Monday to the City Council the police department received seven complaints for fireworks from July 2 through July 6.

Of those seven complaints, five resulted in warnings. Hayse said those individuals were given verbal warnings and told if the police had to come back, they would issue citations. Each of them complied, Hayse said.

In the other two instances, police could not locate the individual letting off fireworks.

He said officers were told if they saw residents shooting off fireworks, they were to give them the same warning, but he said an officer seldom catches someone in the act of letting off fireworks.
