BATAVIA – The city of Batavia has declared a "state of disaster," and Mayor Jeff Schielke issued an executive order establishing a curfew for Wednesday, in advance of a planned demonstration in downtown Batavia.
City Council convened in an emergency meeting on Tuesday, when a "state of disaster" was declared "due to regional civil unrest."
The curfew begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday and ends at 6 a.m on Thursday "in the interest of safety and welfare." It comes in the wake of demonstrations and other forms of protest around the state.
A planned demonstration is expected to begin at noon and end at 2:30 p.m at the Peg Bond Center, 151 N Island Ave. The event is expected to be a sit-in demonstration, and not a march.
