ELBURN – Kaneland High School senior and Venturing Crew 413 member Tim Bohanek, 18, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a special ceremony Feb. 9 at Elburn Fire Station 1.

Bohanek's Eagle project benefited the Elburn Countryside Food Pantry. Bohanek, who lives in Elburn, led a group of volunteers to adjust the height of the shelving in the food bank to meet Illinois Food Bank requirements. In addition to adjusting the shelves, the group cleaned the pantry and painted and fixed windows.

The rank of Eagle is the highest honor in Boy Scouting.

Linda Potvin, an adviser for Venturing Crew 413, has seen many Eagle Scout projects over the years and complimented Bohanek’s leadership and work ethic.

“He knows what he wants, goes for it and gets it done,” she said. “He got everything donated for that project so the food pantry didn’t have to put up any money and not many kids can do that.”

Bohanek was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout who transitioned to Venturing Scouts, which is an inclusive program through the Boy Scouts of American for males and females ages 14 to 21.

Bohanek said Venturing was a better fit for him as he got older.

“I don’t have as much time now, and with the (Boy Scouts) troop it was mostly teaching the younger kids, but with (Venturing) crew, we’re still learning things and it’s more beneficial for the older kids.”
