DeKALB – DeKalb is turning some buildings into warming centers for those unable to find shelter during the upcoming winter weather.

Warming centers are operational during normal business hours, although the hours can vary because of events or during holidays, according to a news release from the DeKalb Fire Department.

The DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St., the DeKalb Senior Center, 330 Grove St., and the DeKalb Park District's Haish Gymnasium, 303 S. Ninth St., will be offered to those who need shelter.

The library is open 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The senior center is closed Saturday and Sunday, and open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Haish gym is closed Sunday, open 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

If none of those locations are open or available, Hope Haven, 1145 Rushmoore Drive, is a 24-hour no-turn-away shelter. Call 815-758-5765 for information.

You should call ahead to check on availability and hours, the release recommends.

Severe cold weather can also affect the elderly, sick and young at a greater rate, the release said, and you can request a well-being check for someone who may be suffering because of extreme weather 24/7 by calling the fire station at 815-748-8400.

According to the city of DeKalb Municipal Code, Chapter 24 regarding building codes, landlords are reminded they must heat residential buildings to at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and at least 62 degrees at all other times. To report inadequate heat in a residential building, call 815-748-2070 during normal business hours, and 815-739-0745 after hours.
