A 57-year-old man whom police found asleep in his car will serve prison time for his fifth drunken driving arrest.
Patrick J. McArdle, of Gilberts, accepted an offer from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office on Friday and pleaded guilty to a felony county of aggravated driving under the influence, according to a news release. McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge accepted the plea and sentenced McArdle to four years in prison.
In exchange for McArdle’s plea, prosecutors dismissed additional aggravated DUI charges. The most serious offense could have landed McArdle in prison for up to 30 years if he were to have been convicted at trial.
Crystal Lake police arrested McArdle on June 30 when officers responded to a report of erratic driving and found McArdle asleep in his vehicle, according to the release.
Officers located open alcoholic beverages in the man’s vehicle, and he later admitted drinking alcohol, according to the release.
